The Union of Students in Ireland leader Gary Redmond has said that the government’s credibility is now ‘in tatters’ after breaking its pre-election pledge not to raise third level fees.

Third level fees were this afternoon raised to a new high of €2,250, while a 3pc decrease in the maintenance grant was also announced.

The cuts were coupled with the abolishment of the postgraduate support grant as well as core funding cuts to third level.

In the wake of the Budgetary news, USI leader Gary Redmond told the Independent that the government’s credibility was now ‘in tatters’.

“The promises laid out in glossy election manifestos, which were loudly trumpeted by candidates less than nine months ago, now lie in tatters along with the credibility of this Government’s stated aim of building long-term sustainable economic growth,” the USI leader said.

The USI this afternoon claimed that the cuts would have a devestating impact on third level and make it exceedingly difficult for many to stay in the system given the current economic condition of the country.

This regressive and short-sighted measure will exclude thousands of would be students from education,” Redmond claimed, referring to the €250 fee increase.
