TCD’s Socialist Worker Student Society has said in a press release that it is ‘totally opposed’ to the upcoming visit of British BNP leader Nick Griffin to the college’s debating society.
The move follows a similar statement from the UK’s Union of Jewish Students who said that the event would create an ‘uncomfortable atmosphere’ for Jewish students on campus’.
Madeleine Johansson of the Anti Racism Network commented that:
‘Allowing fascists to speak gives them legitimacy to spout their disgusting views, and gives others like them strength to do so as well.”
“Fascism is at its base undemocratic. Its core principle is the destruction of democracy and civil liberties, and the physical elimination of minorities and working class organisations. In July more than 60 young social democrats were murdered by Anders Behring-Breivik on Utøya, he was inspired by fascist groups like the English Defence League.”
“This is the real face of fascism and a result of rising islamophobia and racism. The more legitimacy fascists and racists are given the more likely that horrific events like those in Norway will happen again.’
Griffin’s opposing speaker has reportedly said that he will not take part in the debate unless the invitation to Griffin is withdrawn.
Meanwhile a report in the Irish Times this morning indicated that the issue had proved divisive even among the committee of the university’s debating society itself, with a number of committee members having reportedly expressed opposition to allowing Griffin come on campus to speak.
The party said that along with other student, trade union and antiracist groups it would organise a campaign against fascism and a demonstration on the 20th October.
