There are ‘tens of thousands’ of jobs to be filled by the Irish in Australia, according to Australian Northern Territory Minister for Business and Employment, Rob Knight, at a Dublin employment conference.
Knight inspired some hope at the Working Abroad Exposition in the RDS, where experts in the field – ranging from many different nations including Canada and New Zealand – offered advice on finding and securing employment to those currently out of work and those preparing to emigrate.
Knight stated that the North of Australia, in particular, was in “desperate need of skilled workers,” across the board – from construction and mining to the services industry.
“We need people with skills and we need them fast,” the Minister told the crowd of Irish jobseekers. event that also attracted prospective employers from Canada and New Zealand.
Knight highlighted the low unemployment rate of 4% in the Northern territory, and attempted to persuade Irish jobseekers to consider emigrating to his region of the country.
Although the vast majority of Irish emigration until now has been towards Western Australia, this trend may be set to change.
This follows from an announcement made earlier this year by Peter Collier, employment minister for the West, that his region had enough job vacancies – at 450,000 – to employ over a third of Ireland’s unemployed.
