GMIT has officially voted to discontinue its Raise and Give week, after a similar decision was taken by NUIG authorities last year.

GMIT Library 150x150 End of an era as GMIT scraps raise and give weekThe move has been heralded as the ‘end of an era’ in Galway and is the result of years of complaints from aggrieved residents about anti-social behaviour accompanying the event, according to the Galway Independent.

The event was axed after a vote was held by GMIT Student Union’s recent class rep council. The decision takes immediate effect and was carried by a comprehensive margin of 66 votes to one.

The SU will instead opt to run a series of events and charitable fundraisers in lieu of the weeklong event.

Similar calls have been made at University College Cork (UCC) where the college’s philosophical society recently debated proposing to axe the event.

This year’s installation of the event at UCC saw one property on College Road suffer an estimated €15,000 worth of damage as the result of student action.

GMIT Students’ Union President Joe O’Connor said that the events held this year would represent a ‘clear shift’ away from the boisterous events of previous years.
