UCC’s Government and Politics Society have invited BNP leader and renowned racist Nick Griffin to speak at UCC just weeks after he was banned from Trinity after the university decided that it could not guarantee the public’s safety at the event.
The leader of the far-right fringe party has caused controversy by advocating staunchly anti-immigrant views, Holocaust denial, and calling gays “repulsive.”
Griffin’s planned visit to Trinity drew a series of coordinated protests, including that of an anti fascists group, UK Jewish Students Union, before the university releasing a statement to the press saying that the event had been cancelled.

Shortly in the wake of the cancellation, StudentNews.ie reported how Griffin had sent a letter to Bob Geldof, Al Pacino, and U2, begging them to intervene with Trinity’s Philosoph to have the decision reversed.
It now seems as if Griffin is set to come to UCC, however, after he reportedly accepted an invitation from UCC’s Government and Political Society to speak at an upcoming event.
Writing in today’s Irish Times the society’s auditor, Ben English, said that:
“Our invitation to Mr Griffin is by no means a defence of what he has to say, rather it is a defence of his right to say it. I do hope that University College Cork – a college with strong liberal roots, will not succumb to any outside pressure and prevent this event going ahead.”
